Movie Review. Set during World War II, U is a fictional tale inspired by a composite of events that transpired during the Battle of the Atlantic. In April of , Allied forces lose ship after ship all along the eastern U.S. seaboard. The German submarines (a.k.a. U-boats) responsible for most of the losses are using a secret radio code which the U.S. Navy can’t crack. U is a World War II drama based upon a real story. The Nazis used a code machine called Enigma. The United States decided to try to capture one from a damaged U-Boat. The Americans came up with a daring plan, but things went wrong.
"U" is a clever wind-up toy of a movie, almost a trailer for a video game. Compared to "Das Boot" or "The Hunt For Red October," it's thin soup. The characters are perfunctory, the action is recycled straight out of standard submarine formulas, and there is one shot where a man is supposed to be drowning and you can just about see he's standing on the bottom of the studio water tank. These movies include Crash Dive (), The Enemy Below (), Torpedo Run (), and U (). The non-World War II sub movie, The Hunt for Red October () also won just the one Oscar, as did the World War II part sub movie 49th Parallel (), but for Best Original Story.

Sadly, U is damaged beyond repair, and must be abandoned by the American prize crew, although all code materials and Enigma machine are recovered. The Americans are picked up by a US Navy Catalina flying boat and rescued along with the prized code equipment. While the film is well made and entirely entertaining, the action is seriously far fetched and unrealistic, and of course fictional.

This summer's U brought the World War II submarine adventure back to the silver screen with stunning special effects and plenty of action.
